Searching the Internet

If none of the above sources has a definition for your term perform a Google search for your term with the following formats:

  1. define "[term name] is"
  2. define "[term names] are"

Building a Definition

If Google fails to find a definition you must build a definition using using ISO 704:2009:

  1. Identify the context of the term
  2. Identity the attributes of the term 
  3. Identify the characteristics of the term
  4. Combine the characteristics to form the definition
  5. Adding the designation type to the definition

Context

The Authority Document, Section, and Citation the term is found in.

Attributes

The individual terms that comprise the term.

Characteristics

The definitions for each attribute that fits the context of the term

Combine Characteristics

Combine the characteristics together into a cohesive concept, your term’s definition, that fits the context in which it was found.

Designation Type

Every dictionary lists the designation type for each definition. This will be covered more in the next step.
